"A satisfying mystery unfolds."

Unlike her last Georgia O'Keeffe mystery, A Slant of Light (2025), Lasky's latest doesn't feature world events, but it's no less impactful. Georgia plans a trip to what she calls the Black Place, the Bisti Badlands in New Mexico, with her friend Ansel Adams when they come across an archaeological dig where a significant discovery has been made. Yale professor Douglas Acheson has found relics that could change everything scientists thought they knew about the Anasazi people, but since the technology of carbon dating is still in development, he needs more proof. Meanwhile, Juan Nez, the man who finds bones for Georgia to paint, has gone missing and his godson, Pablo, is distraught. Wynnie Haloke, a Diné woman who works at the local trading post, joins the dig and makes some uncomfortable discoveries of her own, both on and off the site. As always, Lasky movingly portrays Georgia's obsession with light and color and how she captures those two in her art, all while a satisfying mystery unfolds. Readers who like historical mysteries that intersect with real-life people will enjoy this series.
