Daughters of the Sea is historical fiction with a fantasy element. The featured girls discover their mermaid heritage, but also deal with non-fiction elements like navigation, currents, and social history.

These books could be read for the Common Core Curriculum in conjunction with the fairy tale Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, where the mermaid wants to become human but pays a terrible price.
